The Renaissance (French for "rebirth") was a period of unprecendented productivity as 14th - 16th century artists, scientists, composers and tradesmen literally redesigned their world. Inventors flourished. The printing press made books and education widely available. Business, too, was reborn as Europe emerged from economic stagnation and propelled the Middle Ages into a new era of financial growth.
